Traveling with RA 101

Joint stiffness and dealing with flare-ups can make traveling with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) a challenge.

Watch the video above for some tips that may help, or read the written summary below.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Reduce the likelihood of pain and stiffness by making sure you get enough shut-eye before your trip.

Keep Medicine Easily Accessible

Keep medicines close (in a purse or carry-on) so you can take them at the appropriate times.

Stretch

Regardless of how you travel, make time to stretch.

Walk up and down the aisles on a plane or train, or stop the car every few hours to get out and move around.

Wear Loose Clothes

Tight, constricting clothing can cause pain and discomfort. Opt for loose-fitting pants and skirts — anything comfortable that will give you room to move around.

Bring Comforts of Home

Bring things that will keep you comfortable, like a pillow, warm socks or an eye mask.

Avoid the Sun

The sun can be quite harmful to people with RA, so bring along sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin.

Stay Hydrated

Traveling can be very dehydrating, which can make symptoms worse. Keep water with you at all times.

Pack Wisely

Travel light, and use a wheelie suitcase to make transporting your luggage much easier.

Avoid Stopovers

If you are flying or taking a train, avoid stopovers to eliminate the risk of rushing through the airport or station with your luggage.
